Launch of the All Party Parliamentary Malaria Group Second Report on Financing Mechanisms for Malaria
15 March 2007
The UK All Party Parliamentary Malaria Group (APPMG) report on financing mechanisms was launched in the House of Commons (London) today by the UK Secretary of State for International Development Hilary Benn.
The report warns that despite a 10 fold increase in malaria funding in the last 10 years, there remains a large finance gap of US$3.2 billion to be filled through increased donor funding and increased malaria-endemic country spending on malaria control...
The report reiterates that tackling malaria remains one of the most cost effective public health interventions, producing excellent health and economic returns. It also highlights the need for predictable and sustained funding through existing and innovative sources and efficient deployment of available resources, to provide an effective response to this preventable and treatable disease.
The report states that of the total of US$3.2 billion per year needed to meet the malaria related MDGs and Abuja targets only US $600m were available according to the most up to date figures released in 2004. An additional US$323m were available for research.
The report emphasises the availability of tools to prevent and treat malaria and the urgent need to support the actual delivery and use of measures that can control malaria but are not reaching those who need them.
With 3.2 billion people at risk of contracting malaria, the financial needs only equal US$1 per person at risk.
