Malaria updates

17 October 2007

Bill & Melinda Gates Malaria Forum: The Gates Foundation is hosting a 2-1/2 day forum of its scientific/technical grantees, government officials and selected representatives from private industry and the advocacy community to address the forum’s theme, Collaboration, Innovation, Impact. Partners are invited to view the plenary sessions, courtesy of the Kaiser Family Foundation: www.kaisernetwork.org.  While the meeting is focused on the scientific/technical components of the malaria agenda, the community is encouraged to use this event continue to raise malaria’s profile among the public, opinion leaders, policymakers and potential funders. Two side meetings for advocacy-focused participants are scheduled. A summary of advocacy-related highlights will be circulated following the forum.

UNICEF Malaria Data Report Launch: UNICEF has just released a new report, Malaria and Children.  The report shows a notable scale-up in bed net coverage which is having an impact on child survival. This is a “good news” story for malaria as it demonstrates what is possible with even modest investments and the impact that can be seen in a relatively short period after investment.  Additional progress is expected with continued/sustained investment. View the report.

World Bank Malaria Booster Program Report Launch: Last week, the World Bank released a progress report on its global malaria activities. To date, the Bank has invested $500 million in 19 programs.  View the full report.
